We got an early start on Saturday to see if we could get into some Mahi action. We cleared the St. Lucie inlet at around 6:00am and were trolling in 60' within about 20 minutes towards Push Button Hill. Fishing was a little slow with a few mystery bites here and there. We found a decent weed line at around 14 miles NE of the inlet where we picked up 2 dolphin and missed a few others. We also caught a Sharp Nose shark on my Islander lure that I troll way back. This is the 3rd shark I have caught on the lure in the past few trips. I had to cut my cable to get the lure back each time as I could not get the hook out of his mouth. As we were trolling back towards the inlet in about 280' of water, the middle rod that I was trolling far back with a black and orange popper type lure with a ballyhoo, in place of the Islander lure that I had to change out due to the shark encounter earlier got slammed hard. I knew it was something big as the drag was screaming. With nothing coming out of the water, I had a good Idea it was a Wahoo and sure enough after about 20 minutes it was at the boat and a beauty it was. We measured it at over 5 feet. A great surprise for a relatively slow day. This is why I keep fishing after 40 years as you never know what is going to nail that rod. Looking forward more than ever to my next fishing adventure!!!!
