Took Rick & Jeremy out today to hunt for fins. Met Shell Catcher from Okeechobee this morning while waiting for the crew. Just wanted to find out how you guys made out today. Hope you put your son on some big fish.

We headed to the NE spot and managed just one blue runner. Move over to my spot midway between the red buoy and Bullshark and loaded up on huge greenies. Stopped by Bullshark and top off the wells with some sardines before heading offshore.

Seen Vindawg there catching baits. Nice Boat Vindawg, how did you guys make out today?

With a large storm straight offshore and as far north as you can see, we opted to head to clearer skies SE. We found good scattered weeds in 250ft off the Loran Tower and made a 1/2 hr drift here with no takers.

With a tip from Ocean Motion we continued east in search of the large mats of weeds they seen on during their crossing to the West End at 20 miles offshore of Jupiter. With the east winds blowing all night I knew we should run into them sooner.

We found the large mats in 450ft 11 miles offshore (14 miles from SLI). We worked various mats doing the normal chunking and menhaden mixes for about a hour before the first fin finally showed up.

Congrats Jeremy on your first fin.

After continued efforts, we decided to venture further east to see if we can locate some more mat’s out deeper. We drive under a large rain cloud and got almost to the other side when I spotted two mat’s of weeds the size of a dinner table.

We pull up to them and they are covered up with large baits. We worked these for a few drifts when all of the sudden we see lightning & hear thunder at the same time, a few hundred yards off our stern.

We quickly got all the rods down off the T-top, put down the VHF antenna and haul butts back west. It only took 5 minutes to get to the east edge of the cloud on the way out but we seemed to drive in the driving rain and lightning for miles before getting back out of them storm on the westward side.

We didn’t clear the rain until we got past Push Button Hill. Strangest thing I have ever seen. It is like it grew to 15 times its size in 15 minutes.

There was another storm approaching the inlet so we opted to drift some livey’s in 80ft while the storm passed. We saw a small window between the storm passing over the inlet and the next on moving in an called it a day around 12:30pm.

We made it all the way to the pocket before the skies opened up. Needless to say we were all drenched to the bone. Still a fun day… Not many pics today due to the conditions…

Today’s Tally
1 Fin
3 Rainstorms
1 Thunderstorm

How did you all make out today?

Tip of the day

Running & Gunning for fins. Have everyone onboard, onboard with the idea. Let them all know upfront and all agree before doing this that it takes all eyes onboard to help locate that floating debris or patch of weeds that can make or break the day. Everyone must have their heads on a swivel and eyes scanning the surface both far and near the boat.
