Taking Cal and his uncle John out today. This is the first time for John besides a drift boat experience many years ago. No bait guy at the ramp so we started hunting baits at the Northeast spot. Found sardines there but the school was so small we kept losing track of them and just hooking up Hornbellies.

Here is Lets Go and crew. How was your trip today?

We ran over to Bullshark and picked up a few dozen sardines there then hit Evans Crary for a few more before heading offshore.

Stopped in 190ft (Thanks Undertaker for the heads up on the depth) and worked this rip loaded with weeds for a few drifts with nothing showing but a remora.

Moved out to 280 on another rip with weeds and finally got the first fish of the day. John hooks up to his first Sailfish and it was a big one. Johns smile says it all.

This one has some shoulders on him. He hooked up just 30 yards off the back of the boat skying out of the water. What an awesome site.

John does a masterful job bringing in his first sail. Congrats John…

We opted to head south on this line and the next drift didn’t produce. We locate a nice line of weeds running from east to west and dropped in the lives. Cal quickly spots a fin toying with our short bait.

I toss out some chunks to keep him around while Cal tosses in a new livey and hooks up. Kept this guy in the water but no one with him.

Worked this area for a couple more drifts with no other takers. Rigged up a couple ballyhoo and trolled south from here to get out of the way of a storm moving in from the east. Got down past the Loran Tower and dropped in some livey’s on some scattered weeds.

Nothing biting here so headed in to 170ft on another line and dropped in some more sardines here. Cal and John immediately hook up to some large Bonitas. John’s line get cut off from his fish during the fight.

Cal releases his Bonita and as it swims away I spot a large object tearing after it for lunch.

Decided to call it a day and run to Bullshark Barge to make one last drift. Nothing doing here either as there was a couple of boats anchored up on the barge so we had to drift away from the structure.

Had a great time today John & Cal. Hope we can do it again soon.

Today’s Tally
1 - Sailfish
1 - Dolphin
1 - Bonita

How did you all make out today?

Tip of the day

Always have some chunk bait at the ready. Today that fin killed the short bait and didn't want it. I tossed out some chunk bait to keep him around. When dropping him into the fish box he spits out a piece of that chunk bait.
